What is Oral Sedation?
When patients choose to get oral sedation, we give them a pill designed to put them in a relaxed state. This has many benefits:
- The pill is easy to take and acts as a potent analgesic.
- There's no need to worry about needles or inhalation.
- The patient remains awake and responsive.
Sometimes, a patient's nerves leave us unable to give them all the treatment they need during a single appointment. By reducing these nerves, sedation allows us to minimize the number of appointments required. Many of our anxious patients appreciate this!
What to Know Before Using Oral Sedation
The effects of oral conscious sedation pills aren't instantaneous. This makes it vital that you take the capsule when instructed. If you don't, you may not be fully sedated when you start, or the effects may wear off during the treatment if you take it too early.
While the effects aren't noticeable right away, you still shouldn't drive to your appointment. Sedatives will make you euphoric, numbing your senses and keeping you barely awake and alert.
